A breed of mosquito that carries a host of potentially fatal diseases has arrived in Britain.
Two Asian tiger mosquitoes, which can transmit up to 23 infections – including the West Nile virus which killed 300 in America in 2002 – were found in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on Monday.
Experts fear the pest, which is about 5mm long with yellow stripes, is thriving in the warm, wet summer.
It is thought the insects came in a shipment from abroad.
A Health Protection Agency spokesman said they were 'prolific biters' but unlikely to pose a danger in a European climate.

But the society said that while this was a positive step, it was disappointed that due to the use of battery eggs in Mars bars, parent company Masterfoods was unable to proceed with official Vegetarian Society accreditation.
On of the criteria for approval for the society’s seedling symbol is that any eggs used in a product must be free range.
Vegetarian Society chief executive Annette Pinner said: “We are pleased that Masterfoods has recognised the importance of labelling to its vegetarian customers and are happy to remain in dialogue with the manufacturer.”
